Trump’s first day in India: A massive rally with Modi and a tour of the ‘truly incredible’ Taj Mahal
NEW DELHI — President Trump arrived in India for his first official visit to the world’s largest democracy, kicking off a whirlwind 36-hour tour Monday with a mega-rally that drew about 100,000 people and a visit to India’s iconic Taj Mahal.
in her white flowy spring dress, Melania Trump cut a graceful figure at the ceremonial welcome for husband Donald Trump at the Rashtrapati Bhavan today. It is Day 2 of the US First Couple's India visit. And in what might just seem as a fashion coincidence (but we're not settling for it), Melania chose a crisp cotton white shirt dress, with embroidered flowers, by Carolina Herrera.
Keeping with her soft diplomacy statements through fashion, after those check pants by Indian-American designer Rachel Roy and the green sash with an India connect, Melania has chosen yet another Indian connect to play up on Day 2.
What caught our attention were those embroidered flowers on Melania's dress: it is the lotus. The lotus motif on the shirt dress is a tribute and hark-back to Herrera's Venezuelan roots, a country where the lotus is quite popular. It is hardly a coincidence then that the FLOTUS chose to wear a dress with lotus on it, in pink, saffron and blue, on the second day of her India visit.
The lotus is India's national flower. It is also the symbol of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Did Melania give a nod to the BJP lotus with her embroidered shirt dress? Or was it just a tribute to the Indian national flower? Well, the lotus in all those three colours on her dress tell us it is probably both.
The Carolina Herrera dress is for GBP 1,241 (that's Rs 1,15,265).
Melania's dress was cinched at the waist with a red belt, coordinated with her husband's red tie. She rounded off the look with a pair of white heels, the same that she landed in India in yesterday.
